#teamSPEAR Step Ahead classes for stroke patients

26th Sep 2016

The SPEAR Step Ahead classes for stroke patients are back again after the summer.  The Step Ahead Charity, set up by SPEAR and run by an independent committee, offers physiotherapy-led post stroke exercise classes at the Aberdeen Sports Village.

Run by SPEAR’s neuro-physiotherapists, the classes are designed for maximum outcome and provide a fun and supportive environment for stroke patients. Carers also gain support from the friendly team and other carers as they can enjoy a coffee in the cafe during the class.

SPEAR’s neuro-physiotherapist, Lesley explains why the classes are so important to the participants “ All the circuits completed in the class are evidence based to improve function post stroke. The classes are dynamic and everyone works hard but have a lot of fun. This is an important aspect of the class, but it’s also so much more than that!”

“The peer support and confidence that both class participants and carers get is very special and the social aspect is a large part of it. Our meals out are sometimes the first time that members have been out for a meal with their spouse, it’s these “’firsts” which are often the most difficult and all do so much better when with friends who understand.”

Step Ahead classes run on a Tuesday at 12PM-1pm and 1.15PM to 2.15 pm and Wednesday from 11.30am – 12.20pm and 1pm to 2pm at the Aberdeen Sports Village.
